A nurse practitioner (NP) is an advanced practice registered nurse who provides clinical care within the scope allowed by state law and national certification. NP students complete graduate clinical hours with preceptors in the chosen population focus.
NP programs are population-focused. An FNP student generally needs family or primary care experiences; a PMHNP student needs psychiatric care. Choosing a preceptor outside that focus is a common reason universities decline a site.
