Compensation

Earning as a preceptor: what we can and cannot say

Compensation for precepting is not standardized. Some clinicians precept as part of employment, some receive a stipend from a school or student arrangement allowed by policy, and some precept without extra pay. PreceptorFinder does not guarantee income and does not publish a rate card as if it were universal.

Verify before you agree

Ask your employer whether moonlighting or student stipends are allowed. Ask the student’s university whether paid arrangements are permitted. Do not assume a student’s offer is automatically compliant.

If you discuss compensation, keep the terms in writing and consistent with your employment contract and applicable law. This page is educational, not legal or tax advice.
