How to email a preceptor

Keep the first email short. Put the decision facts in the first screen. Attach a CV. Do not paste your life story.

Suggested structure

  1. Subject line with program and dates (for example, “FNP student requesting preceptorship, Jan–Apr”).
  2. One sentence who you are and which university.
  3. Hours, days you can attend, and population required.
  4. The credential rule in one sentence (“My program requires an NP certified in family practice”).
  5. A single question: whether they can host a student this term.
  6. Thank them and include a phone number.

What not to do

  • Do not claim the university already approved the site if it has not.
  • Do not pressure with a deadline in a way that skips required documents.
  • Do not send group emails that expose other clinicians’ addresses.
