How nursing preceptorship works

Preceptorship is a supervised learning relationship. The student practices under the preceptor’s license and site policies, while faculty remain responsible for the academic course.

During clinical hours

Expect a mix of observation, guided practice, and increasing independence as safety allows. You should know how to reach the preceptor, how notes are signed, and how to escalate concerns.

Documentation

Most programs require hour logs, patient-type tracking, midterm and final evaluations, and prompt notice if the schedule changes. Missing paperwork can delay a grade even when hours were completed.

Need help finding a preceptor?

Tell PreceptorFinder what your program requires. A team member reviews your request and works to identify preceptor options based on specialty, location, hours, and university rules.
