Preceptor requirements students should confirm

There is no single national preceptor checklist. Your university’s current manual is the authority. Use the questions below so you do not nominate someone the program will decline.

Questions to take to your coordinator

  • Which licenses and national certifications are accepted for this course?
  • How many years of practice are required?
  • Must the preceptor work in a specific setting or population?
  • Are physicians, PAs, or CNMs accepted, or only NPs?
  • Is telehealth allowed, and for how many hours?
  • Does the site need an existing affiliation agreement?

Do not guess

A clinician can be an excellent teacher and still be ineligible. Confirm in writing when the answer is unclear. PreceptorFinder can help locate people; we cannot rewrite your program’s rules.

Need help finding a preceptor?

Tell PreceptorFinder what your program requires. A team member reviews your request and works to identify preceptor options based on specialty, location, hours, and university rules.
