How to contact a potential preceptor

Short, complete messages get more replies than long personal stories. Include who you are, which university and course, dates, hours, and the credential rules your program requires.

Include in the first note

  • Full name, university, and program (for example FNP or BSN).
  • Requested dates and total hours.
  • Required specialty or population.
  • A resume or CV.
  • A clear ask: whether they can host a student this term.

Follow-up

One polite follow-up after about a week is reasonable. Repeated daily messages are not. If the clinic has a student coordinator, use that channel. For email language, see the Academy email guide.

Need help finding a preceptor?

Tell PreceptorFinder what your program requires. A team member reviews your request and works to identify preceptor options based on specialty, location, hours, and university rules.
