Hours

How clinical hours affect your preceptor search

There is no universal hour number for every nursing student. BSN, MSN, and NP courses publish different totals, and some hours must occur with a defined population. Confirm the current requirement before you ask a preceptor for a schedule.

What to confirm

  • Total hours for the course or degree.
  • Whether hours are direct patient care only.
  • Whether simulation, orientation, or telehealth counts.
  • Minimum hours with a specific age group or setting.
  • How missed days are made up.

Why hour totals change availability

A clinician who can host 80 hours may not be able to host 500. Share the real number in the first message. If you are unsure, ask your coordinator before you request matching help.

Need help finding a preceptor?

Tell PreceptorFinder what your program requires. A team member reviews your request and works to identify preceptor options based on specialty, location, hours, and university rules.
