Can Nursing Students Use a Private Practice for Clinical Hours?

Private practice can work when the university allows it and the patient mix matches the course. It is not automatically eligible.

Some programs allow private practices for nursing or NP hours. Others require specific facility types, existing affiliation agreements, or a minimum panel size. The only reliable answer is your current practicum manual.

Questions to ask before you spend weeks on outreach

  • Does this course allow a private practice or independent clinic?
  • Must the preceptor hold a specific certification?
  • Will the site complete onboarding and evaluations on your timeline?

If the site type is allowed and you still cannot locate a clinician, submit a matching request.

If you need help locating a preceptor after you understand your program’s rules, tell PreceptorFinder what your program requires.

Need help finding a preceptor?

Tell PreceptorFinder what your program requires. A team member reviews your request and works to identify preceptor options based on specialty, location, hours, and university rules.
